In a very exciting departure, I’m writing about nail art that isn’t green!! I’ve been on a bit of a theme lately, so here’s something different.  Along with opal nails, trying to recreate nails that look like semi-precious stones has been a challenge. This Amethyst Crystal Nail Art uses a smooshing technique which worked really well to create the layers and stripes you see in this type of stone.

I started with one coat of Blanc White, which despite its name is not white at all! It’s a very pale yellow-toned nude colour, fairly sheer. Although I don’t really like sheer polishes, this was going to be well covered, so it didn’t matter.

Since it’s only one coat on my base, it dries and sets pretty quickly. Using my nail art mat, I painted an oblong of Blanc White about the same size as my nail. While still wet, I followed that up with horizontal stripes of the rest of my polishes on top of that oblong.

I tried to keep the glittery shades (Cathy and Eternal Beauty) to a minimum, so that those stripes in particular were quite well defined.

Next, I used my stamper to pick up the polish and apply it to my nail. You get a few chances at this, because there is a fair amount of polish on the mat, so as long as you move quickly, this works. Since the polishes I chose were mostly on the sheer size, this was lucky!

Once I was happy with the base, I cleaned up and added top coat.  It was pretty, but a bit too subtle – see my photo above.  I decided to add a bit of stamping using Eternal Beauty which stamps beautifully, like the rest of the Color Club holos.

This ended up being quite a dreamy, subtle design, which wasn’t exactly what I intended.  It has beautiful sparkle, and it’s relatively neutral, so would go with nearly anything.  It definitely needed the stamping, but I really enjoyed the technique, which was less messy than a normal smoosh. Next time, I’ll use brighter colours in the mix to get better definition in my stripes.

What do you think? Do you think this looks like amethyst, or does it remind you of something else?
